Want the best lawn in the street?
Dethatching
Have you noticed your lawn become soft and spongy over time? Lawns will naturally accumulate a layer of dead grass and other organic matter called thatch.
There are many problems associated with thatch, such as
- Prevents water, air, and nutrients from reaching the root zone. This results in poor root growth and an unhealthy lawn.
- Thatch is a favourable environment for fungal diseases to grow.
- Creates a spongy surface that is susceptible to scalping when mowing.
Dethatching is the process of removing this layer. Dethatching is typically done with a specialised tool called a scarifier or verti mower, which uses vertical blades to remove the thatch from the lawn.
Dethatching is a very labour intensive service that produces a surprising amount of green waste.
Our dethatching service consists of –
- Removal of lawn thatch.
- Mowing to reset the height of the lawn.
- Applications of high-quality fertiliser, wetting agents and soil amendments in order to stimulate the growth of a beautiful new lawn.
- Green waste disposal.
Aeration
Aeration is a key service that is necessary to anyone in the Canberra region that is serious about having a great lawn.
Lawn coring is a highly effective method of aerating your lawn to combat compaction and thatch buildup. This process involves removing small plugs of soil from the lawn, creating a pathway for air, water, and nutrients to penetrate and reach the root zone. This encourages root development and enhances the overall resilience of the lawn. There are many advantages to aerating your lawn; here are three of the of the most important advantages for lawns in the Canberra region
- Promote healthy roots. Aeration combats soil compaction, which is the main contributing factor to an unhealthy root system. This means your lawn will benefit from increased root growth after being aerated. A lawn that has deeper roots has better resilience against periods of extreme heat and drought, and it also requires less supplemental watering as a result.
- Effectively hydrate the soil profile. Aeration creates a direct pathway for water to reach the soil beneath your lawn. The addition of a wetting agent after aerating will further aid in soil hydration.
- Improved response to granular fertiliser. Aeration will also allow fertilisers to easily reach the soil where the lawn can access the nutrients, rather than being trapped in the canopy or thatch layer.
Top Dressing
Top dressing is the process of applying a thin layer of soil over the surface of an existing lawn. There are a number of reasons for top dressing which determine the type of soil to be used. Here are the top 3 reasons for top dressing in the Canberra region
- Leveling – Particularly for clients who use a cylinder mower on their lawn, a level surface is very important to prevent scalping. Top dressing will fill in any low areas and create a more even surface. For this, we would use Fine washed sand.
- Seed germination – When we oversow lawns, it is important to achieve good seed to soil contact for good germination. Maintaining moisture during the germination process is also very important. For these reasons, we use a blend of Fine washed sand/topsoil for oversowing.
- Improve existing soil structure – We can improve poor soil profiles by core aerating and then backfilling the core holes with either Fine washed sand to improve infiltration or compost to improve organic matter and biology.
Tommy’s Turf has access to a wide range of high quality soils and can tailor our top dressing service to the requirements of your lawn. Top dressing is a very labour intensive job, we have the best equipment which allows us to complete top dressing jobs of varying sizes with ease.
